Judge McCallin received his bachelor's degree from Claremont McKenna College and his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Judge McCallin continues to lecture at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

The Commission conducted a personal interview with Judge McCallin, reviewed opinions he authored, his self-evaluation, observed him in court, and reviewed survey responses from attorneys and non-attorneys who had experience with Judge McCallin. Of attorneys completing the survey, 96% recommended retaining and 4% not to retain. Of non-attorneys completing the survey, 97% recommended to retain and 3% not to retain. 23 attorneys and 32 non-attorneys completed the survey.
