Commission: meets standards (9–0)
The Twenty-Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends 9-0 that Judge E. Dale Boyd BE RETAINED.
Judge Boyd was appointed as the Dolores County Court Judge for Dolores County on January 4, 2005. Judge Boyd also serves as the Municipal Judge in the Town of Dove Creek. Judge Boyd graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Science from New Mexico State University in 1970. Judge Boyd also works as a rancher specializing in alfalfa hay production and raising Limousine cattle. He is involved in his community serving as a speaker at the local high school and periodically invites students into his courtroom as an educational opportunity.
The Commission reviewed the results of surveys, reviewed the self-evaluation of Judge Boyd, conducted unannounced courtroom observations, reviewed caseload statistics, and conducted an interview with Judge Boyd prior to making the recommendation for retention. The survey asked “how strongly do you recommend that Judge Boyd be retained in office, or not be retained in office?” Of attorneys completing the survey 75% recommended to retain and 25% not to retain. Of non-attorneys completing the survey, 100% recommended to retain. Four attorneys and eight non-attorneys completed judicial performance surveys this evaluation cycle.
The Commissioners noted that two of Judge Boyd’s strengths are his fairness and highly positive reputation within the community. Judge Boyd manages his courtroom in a manner that both encourages and accommodates participation by all parties. Although Judge Boyd is one of the few non-attorney judges in the State of Colorado, he attends intensive judicial training on a regular basis and utilizes his life experiences on the bench.
